Development History

2015 - 2016

Chicago

Los Angeles

Initially created as a play by activist & playwright Jay Paul Deratany, CASHIER was joined by Keaton Wooden and Coyote Joe Stevens to develop into a musical. 

​

CASHIER had its first public reading at the Chicago Musical Theater Festival with Underscore Theater, followed by a reading at the LGBT Arts Center of Los Angeles with Producer Robert Ulrich (GLEE, American Horror Story). 

2016 - 2017

Chicago

America's Got Talent star Dani Shay joins as Young Albert.

Albert receives a workshop at The Marriott Theater Lincolnshire before a Developmental Run with Pride Films & Plays in Chicago at Stage 773.

2017 - 2018

New York

Chicago

CASHIER wins the Chicago Jeff Award for "Best New Musical" then performs at the New York Musical Theater Festival directed by trans activist Shakina Nayfack. 

 

Producer Christine Russell (Beautiful: the Carole King Musical) joins the project. 

Albert receives an industry-only reading in Manhattan directed by winner Tony-Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), including new songs by Stevens & Wooden and a new ending.

CASHIER releases an EP for fans starring Dani Shay, Joe Stevens & Keaton Wooden produced by Empty Sea Studios in Seattle.

2018 - 2019

CASHIER continues development, including recording a new studio album, new songs & additional characters. 

 

CASHIER joins forces with the Trans Entertainment Guild for a charity concert series helmed by Mika Kaufman, with proceeds going to trans partner charities.

 

Culminating in an industry reading in Los Angeles, and joining Broadway Producer Ryan Bogner (Kite Runner) as Lead Producer with Christine Russell.
